Blog Question: Is bullying a rite of passage of childhood and adolescence? Is it a part of the maturation process one needs to go through to reach adulthood? Explain. Mrs. Hogeboom brings up this topic on page 108.

Post: Bullying is when children have experienced something bad or tragic in their early childhood, and this comes out later in life as pent up anger and cruelty on other weaker children. Bullying is also when you yourself have gone through it, sometimes severe physical bullying and sometimes stinging verbal bullying. Sometimes bullying can be taught to you by your own parents! If you have been taught bullying then it is natural that you will bully others. Sometimes kids bully because they think it's fun, and sometimes they bully because they think it's powerful, and sometimes they bully just to be popular. Is this natural? In the case of parents teaching you bullying, yes it is, and you may need counseling. But for the other reasons you cannot say for sure if it is natural? Maybe the only way to cure bullying is to confront bullies or be kind and friendly with the bullies and break the bullies shield and bring out the real gentle person? Confrontations can also help a lot. It throws the bully of his guard and unsettles him. Take for example The Revealers, when Elliot was being picked upon by the Jock Rots, this is what happened. "Casually they surrounded him. Blanchette slapped him hard on the shoulder; Elliot stumbled and Blanchette grinned. Then. from behind, Burke started unzipping his backpack. Elliot reached in his jacket pocket and pulled something out.
He took a step back. the something was dark and not very big. hanging from his hand. The three Rots were just standing there looking when Elliot swung this thing overhead. and it came and smacked Burke on the forehead. "
And then the book says how Burke went down and the Rots just stood there stunned for a few minute. This shows that confrontations can really unsettle bullies. But confrontations aren't always the best thing to do, as next the Jock Rots attacked Elliot, and accidentally dropped him off a bridge. But the confrontation made sure that the Jock Rots will think before bullying Elliot again.
Bullying is a strange thing and people do it for strange reasons, but confrontations may sometimes be the easiest way to stop bullies.
